Culture, Children and Couple Gender Inequality

This paper examines how culture impacts within-couple gender inequality. Exploiting the setting of Germany's division and reunification, I compare child penalties couples socialised in a more gender-egalitarian (East Germany) to those gender-traditional (West Germany). Using household panel, show that long-run penalty on female income share is 26.9 percentage points West German couples, compared 15.5 East couples. additionally among women Germany arrival leads greater increase housework larger care responsibilities than East. A battery robustness checks confirms differences between are not driven by current location, economic factors, day availability or other smooth regional gradients. add main findings using time-use diary data from Democratic Republic (GDR) reunified Germany, comparing parents with childless similar age. provides rare insight into inequality GDR allows effect children effects after reunification. Lastly, attitudes towards maternal employment egalitarian Germans, but traditional for both Germans. The confirm socialisation has strong impact thus as whole.
